Gandhiji’s campaign of ‘ boycott of foreign cloth ‘ resulted in closure of many textile mills in LANCANSHIRE. In 1931, after attending second ROUND TABLE CONF. in England, Gandhiji proceeded to meet the textile workers who lost their jobs. To the dismay of British authorities he received warm reception from them. In his own words …

“ You have 3 million unemployed, but we have nearly 300 million unemployed and underemployed for half the year. Your average unemployment dole is 70 shillings. Our average income is 7 shillings and 6 pence a month. “

“ I can take before them a message of God only by taking the sacred message of work before them. It is good enough to talk of God whilst we are sitting here after a nice breakfast and looking forward to a nicer luncheon, but how am I to talk of God to the millions who have to go without two meals a day? To them God can only appear as bread and butter. “
